When purchasing a VFD for a pump, large industrial fan, compressor, conveying systems for materials, mixing machine or machine tool; an appropriate VFD will allow for far superior motor speed, torque, acceleration, deceleration and overall motor performances ability to be controlled compared to using a conventional across-the-line starter.

What is a variable frequency drive for a three phase motor?

A variable frequency drive also known as an inverter drive, AC drive, or VFD is an electronic device that allows you to control the rotation speed of your electric motor with a three phase AC  supply. In a standard three phase electrical power system, the speed of an electric motor connected to the system is determined by the line frequency such as 50 or 60 Hz. Therefore, by using a variable frequency drive control you can select your output frequency and run your motor at any desired speed according to your needs.

As a result, the motor speed can be optimized for each application with a VFD instead of operating at full speed everywhere. For instance, a pump can slow down when it does not need to deliver as much water; a fan can automatically speed up as it takes load and not start instantly under a heavy load when it is turned on; and a conveyor can keep pace with the production line when it is running. These types of applications are why VFDs are commonly used in many different industrial environments, including HVAC systems, water treatment facilities, manufacturing, agricultural, mining, packaging equipment, etc.
