Soft Starter Performance Testing Steps
In order to determine if a soft starter is working correctly, perform the below-mentioned steps:
1.Disconnect the power supply
Before performing any tests on soft starters, be sure that the unit is turned off to prevent electric shock and possible damage to the unit; however, make sure you are wearing proper protective equipment while working with the unit.
2.Visually inspect equipment
Visually inspect both the soft starter and the motor for any signs of physical damage or loose connections. Look closely at the starter module for solid signs of overheating, discoloration, or burn marks, as these are indicators of an internal component failure.
3.Measure the input voltage and output voltage
Measure the input voltage supplied to the soft starter using a multi-meter or voltmeter, and then measure the output voltage after the soft starter has been actuated. Verify that the voltage ramp up occurs smoothly, as this is the essential function of your device.
4.Conduct functionality tests
Power up the soft starter and let it start the motor. Check to see if the motor starts quietly and the way its acceleration with soft starter meets your expectation. If the motor shakes too much when running or will not start, there may be problems with how you set up the starter or with the components in the starter itself.
5. Test for fault conditions
Most soft starters manufactured today have features to detect faults, such as short circuits or overloads, and will warn you when they occur. Try intentionally creating fault conditions (by adding a resistance to the line to cause an overload, for example) to see if the soft starter reacts as expected to these types of faults. By doing this you will also ensure that any safety features work properly.
